CALLING ALL MOM'S OF SCHOOL AGE KIDS

Got any great ideas for school lunches for your kids? Mine get sick of the same old pb&j. I'd love to hear what you do including sides, drinks etc.

I would like to hear what people do, too! My newest addition this year is frozen go-gurts. They're just the right temp by lunch. And I switched to all water for drinks. I canned a ton of peaches last year and Aidan loved having those in his lunch. I put them in tight tupperware with screw-on lid, and supply a fork.

my neighbor gets little cups with lids and when she sendsveggies with lunch, fills them with ranch dressing.
she also makes wraps from whatever was last nights dinner. her kids love her lunches so much-they cry when they have to eat a school lunch!

There are oodles of Bento bloggers out there - many of whom share recipes and awesome photos. And you don't have to go all cutsie pie, unless you want to! Sometimes, it's the selling of the meal (isn't it, McDonalds?) that gets a kiddo to try something new.

A simple one is laptoplunches.com. Google can take you from there.

This topic is on everyone's minds right now. 2 days into school for us and so far lunch is a hit! I had my daughter sit down with me and make a lunchbox "menu" for the week. I had her concentrate on making sure it contained at least 3-4 of the food groups (this is something she's been learning about recently) so it was well balanced. And I have to say, I think that was my best idea yet. You can see others on my blog http://alaynascreations.blogspot.com/2010/08/lunchbox-ideas.html

My kids love wraps... made with the different kinds of tortillas. You can fill them with taco fillings (meat, cheese, lettuce, avocado, tomato, sour cream), or cream cheese and fruit, or veggie cream cheese with lunch meat and spinach. Lots of options with tortillas!

We do fun tortilla sandwiches sometimes they have put pb and bananas turkey and cheese, turkey and cream cheese, just jelly pizza sauce and pepperoni. Just about anything they can eat on bread they roll in a tortilla. My kids love salads too so they will pack them a salad in a screw on glad ware bowl. Works great!

Depends on how old your kids are, but I have done 'cookie cutter sandwiches'. I have tons of cookie cutters all shapes and sizes, but not much time to bake anymore. One day I decided to use the cookie cutters to jazz up the sandwiches. Was going to discard the edges, but the kids begged to keep that too - like eating a doughnut, because the edges had the same shape cutout inside.

I agree with the others. Bento-style lunches are really cute so your kids will probably have a fun time eating if you make them a bento. It might be a bit more time consuming to make however. But making one would be as unique as plastic gifts cards among regular paper cards. But it's worth a try.

Try creating orange chicken for them, I guess they'll surely like it. I remember when I prepared prom suits for my 2 kids, my wife cooked orange chicken for me which removed my tiredness. Whew!

My son's favorite lunch consists of a small storage container of garlic hummus with veggies for dipping, along with 5 or 6 multi-grain crackers, cheese slices (one per cracker), and grapes. I just throw in an ice pack to keep things cold until its time to eat.

Ask your kids what other children at school eat. Or just join your child for lunch at school sometime so you can observe it. Then maybe they'll be less likely to focus on what Jane and Matt are eating and the fact that they don't have it.
