He used CLAY!? I would use mini chocolate chips or black frosting in a tube and baby carrots!!! (I'm all about simplifying!)
i thought those were carrots and mini chips.
can you imagine the cuteness not being edible? there would be some sad preschoolers if i did clay.

ok, word of advice gals. i made these for our advent party and used candy corn for noses and mini chocolate chips for eyes.
for the eyes i will use brown/black icing next time i think b/c the mini chips did not stay on the donut without a dab of icing and the icing did not stick very well b/c of the powder BUT they were a hit. everyone loved them.
we did not do "mouths" due to the set back with the eyes but they were still adorable!
so cute! just found your site! love this idea-can't wait to try it for our FHE one night!!

Christmas Gift Ideas 2011

I just tried these this morning and used orange Mike and Ike candies for the noses.

A trick that I learned from Bakerella is to use orange candy coated sunflower seeds for mini noses and small sprinkles for the eyes and mouth, OR a black food coloring pen!

I was thinking of orange M&M's for the nose. It's not pointy but... Also sprinkles for the eyes and mouth would be a nice touch.

I made these last night! My mini chocolate chips wanted to fall out, but they started to cooperate when I would insert holes with a toothpick and then wiggle the toothpick a little bit before placing the mini chocoate chips on. They were able to stay in the little holes better. For the nose, I used those chewy orange slices that you can find in the candy aisle in Kroger. I first cut the slice in half, and then made little cuts in a triangle shape to get the point at the end. I'm so glad I found this blog and can't wait to make more cute things!
I made these during a 6th grade class party and they worked great! We used mini chocolate chips that we put in pointy side down. For the nose I bought a bag of gummy/candy oranges (they are in an orange wedge shape) and cut them into triangle-like shapes (3-4 triangles per wedge) I rolled the candy in sugar so they wouldn't stick together.
Just a note. The "CLAY" everyone mentions here is not real clay....it is probably what home bakers refer to as "candy clay".....it is made with marshmallows and other things. Experienced cookie decorators and cake decorators know what candy clay is. I bet if you "googled" it you would get the recipe.

I made these as well, & had a TERRIBLE time with the icing NOT sticking bc of the powdered sugar. Mini chips sounds much better! I used candy corns for the nose; some are orange to the end, but the white tipped ones just looked "snowcapped!"
That's what I was thinking, for the noses! I was just going to use icing for the rest (as we'll have TONS of it around from all the other cookies anyway)!
Use orange tic tacs for the nose, worked like a charm. Still trying to figure out how to make the eyes and mouth stick ....
